My name is Alysia Kirk. I have been a therapist for nearly 15 years in the Pittsburgh area. I was called to this career as a teenager when I went through a rough patch, as many of us do. Following a series of life changes I felt alone and misunderstood. Fortunately for me I met a caring adult who listened and helped me through it. I always felt that without this person my life may have been very different. As a result I felt strongly that I wanted to help others through their dark patches in life too.
Over my career I have worked in a variety of settings from inpatient hospitals, in home family therapy, outpatient clinics and currently private practice. Through this path I have learned diverse skills to help every person. I am a strong believer that each individual should be cared for in their own unique way. Whether it be CBT skills, Person centered therapy, Systems approach, REBT or a combination of all of them everyone deserves to be treated like an individual. No cookie cutter diagnosis or technique fits everyone.
While I work with all clients on a diverse set of concerns including anxiety, depression, life changes and relationship struggles my passion is supporting those with ADHD. Having a lot of person and professional experience in this area I feel uniquely qualified to help others find and maintain their focus in life.
I often feel that ADHD is misunderstood in today’s world as high energy and impulsivity, however this is only the tip of the iceberg. For adults, ADHD is more a difficulty of our “executive functioning” levels such as organization, time management, and prioritization. If you often lose things, have countless unfinished tasks, cant seem to get anything done or find yourself forgetting unless its written down, perhaps ADHD is a concern. With children, the diagnosis effects the whole child and their family with routine disruption, behavior concern, social struggles, self esteem issues and academic difficulties. With individualized treatment I help families, children and adults get control of their life. Feeling more confident and focused at home, work and school.
